U.S. stocks fell for a second day Tuesday on fears that a slump in commodity prices was far from over. Nine of the 10 sectors of the Standard and Poor’s 500 index closed down. Suppliers of raw materials fell the most, 1.9 per cent.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 162.51 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 17,568.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gave up 13.48 points, or 0.7 per cent, to 2,063.59.
The Nasdaq composite slipped 3.57 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 5,098.24.
For the week:
The Dow fell 279.63 points, or 1.6 per cent.
The S&P 500 fell 28.10 points, or 1.3 per cent.
The Nasdaq dropped 44.03 points, or 0.9 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 255.07 points, or 1.4 per cent.
The S&P is up 4.69 points, or 0.2 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 362.19 points, or 7.7 per cent.
