How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Tuesday

Stocks posted their biggest gains in more than a week Tuesday, led by rising energy companies and banks. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index climbed for the second day in a row, something that hadn’t happened since the beginning of November.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 156.41 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 17,524.91.

The S&P 500 index added 21.47 points, or 1.1 per cent, to 2,043.41.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 43.13 points, or 0.9 per cent, to 4,995.36.

For the week:

The Dow is up 259.70 points, or 1.5 per cent.

The S&P is up 31.04 points, or 1.5 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 61.89 points, or 1.3 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 298.16 points, or 1.7 per cent.

The S&P is down 15.49 points, or 0.8 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 259.30 points, or 5.5 per cent.
