How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Tuesday

U.S. stocks closed mostly higher Tuesday, but not enough to make up for big losses the day before. The relatively subdued trading came a day after a slump in China set off a bout of selling in global markets.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 9.72 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 17,158.66.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index edged up 4.04 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 2,016.70.

The Nasdaq composite fell 11.66 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 4,891.43.

For the week:

The Dow is down 266.37 points, or 1.5 per cent.

The S&P 500 is down 27.23 points, or 1.3 per cent.

The Nasdaq is down 115.98 points, or 2.3 per cent.
