U.S. stocks closed mostly higher Tuesday, but not enough to make up for big losses the day before. The relatively subdued trading came a day after a slump in China set off a bout of selling in global markets.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 9.72 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 17,158.66.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index edged up 4.04 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 2,016.70.
The Nasdaq composite fell 11.66 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 4,891.43.
For the week:
The Dow is down 266.37 points, or 1.5 per cent.
The S&P 500 is down 27.23 points, or 1.3 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 115.98 points, or 2.3 per cent.
