Major U.S. stock indexes ended modestly lower on Wednesday, extending losses from the day before. Discouraging economic reports on jobs, manufacturing and construction spending weighed on the market. Oil prices soared on signs that U.S. production is slowing.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 77.94 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 17,698.18.
The S&P 500 index fell 8.20 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 2,059.69.
The Nasdaq composite shed 20.66 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 4,880.23.

The S&P 500 index is down 1.33 points, or 0.1 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 10.99 points, or 0.2 per cent.

The Dow is down 124.89 points, or 0.7 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 0.79 points, or 0.04 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 144.17 points, or 3.0 per cent.
