Good news on U.S. retail sales lifted the stock market Thursday, although worries about the latest plunge in oil prices kept the gains in check.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 63.19 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 17,596.34.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 9.19 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 2,035.33.
The Nasdaq composite added 24.14 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 4,708.16
For the week:
The Dow is down 362.45 points, or 2 per cent.
The S&P 500 is down 40.04 points, or 1.9 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 72.59 points, or 1.5 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 1,019.68 points, or 6.2 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 186.97 points, or 10.1 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 531.57 points, or 12.7 per cent.
