Stocks closed sharply lower on Wednesday as another plunge in the price of oil dragged down the energy sector. Exxon Mobil and Chevron were among the biggest decliners in the Dow Jones industrial average.
The Dow Jones industrial average lost 268.05 points, or 1.5 per cent, to 17,533.15.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 33.68 points, or 1.6 per cent, to 2,026.14
The Nasdaq composite slipped 82.44 points, or 1.7 per cent, to 4,684.03.

The Dow is down 425.64 points, or 2.4 per cent.
The S&P 500 is down 49.23 points, or 2.4 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 96.73 points, or 2 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is up 956.49 points, or 5.8 per cent.
The S&P 500 index is up 177.78 points, or 9.6 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 507.44 points, or 12.2 per cent.
