How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Monday

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The stock market was able to recover from steep losses to close slightly lower on Monday as investors looked past another steep drop in the price of oil and renewed concerns about economic growth in China and the U.S. Oil and gas companies remained in the red.

On Monday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 17.12 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 16,449.18.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 0.86 of a point, or 0.04 per cent, to 1,939.38.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 6.41 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 4,620.37.

For the year:

The Dow is down 975.85 points, or 5.6 per cent.

The S&P 500 is down 104.56 points, or 5.1 per cent.

The Nasdaq is down 387.04 points, or 7.7 per cent.
