How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Monday

U.S. stocks closed slightly lower Monday, edging back from the major indexes’ record highs set late last week.

Drug company and consumer-focused shares weighed on the market the most, while energy stocks surged along with the price of oil.

On Monday:

The Dow Jones industrial average slipped 14.24 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 18,529.29.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index dipped 1.98 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 2,180.89.

The Nasdaq composite shed 7.98 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 5,213.14.

For the year:

The Dow is up 1,104.26 points, or 6.3 per cent.

The S&P 500 is up 136.95 points, or 6.7 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 205.73 points, or 4.1 per cent.
