NEW YORK, N.Y. – U.S. stocks ended pretty much where they started Thursday after they spent the day cycling up and down. Investors bought safe picks like phone companies and food makers after a surprisingly weak report on the job market.
On Thursday:
The Dow Jones industrial average added 9.38 points, less than 0.1 per cent, to 17,720.50.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index ticked down 0.35 points to 2,064.11.
The Nasdaq composite index lost 23.35 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 4,737.33.
For the week:
The Dow is down 20.13 points, or 0.1 per cent.
The S&P 500 is up 6.97 points, or 0.3 per cent.
The Nasdaq is up 1.18 points.
For the year:
The Dow is up 295.47 points, or 1.7 per cent.
The S&P 500 is up 20.17 points, or 1 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 270.08 points, or 5.4 per cent.
