Stocks closed slightly lower on Tuesday after another bumpy day. Major indexes wavered between gains and losses for most of the day Tuesday, then ended barely in the red. Energy companies once again suffered the biggest losses as the price of oil took another tumble.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 12.67 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 16,014.38.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index lost 1.23 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 1,852.21.
The Nasdaq composite index slid 14.99 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 4,268.76.
For the week:
The Dow is down 190.59 points, or 1.2 per cent.
The S&P 500 is down 27.84 points, or 1.5 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 94.38 points, or 2.2 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 1,410.65 points, or 8.1 per cent.
The S&P 500 is down 191.73 points, or 9.4 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 738.65 points, or 14.8 per cent.
