NEW YORK, N.Y. – Stocks staged a rapid comeback in late-afternoon trading to close solidly higher Wednesday, helped by a surge in the price of oil and a decline in the U.S. dollar.
The Dow Jones industrial average added 183.12 points, or 1.1 per cent, to 16,336.66.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 9.50 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 1,912.53.
The Nasdaq composite index fell 12.71 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 4,504.24.
For the week:
The Dow is down 129.64 points, or 0.8 per cent.
The S&P 500 has lost 27.71 points, or 1.4 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 109.72 points, or 2.4 per cent.
For the year:
The Dow is down 1,088.37 points, or 6.3 per cent.
The S&P 500 is down 131.41 points, or 6.4 per cent.
The Nasdaq is down 503.17 points, or 10.1 per cent.
