Markets Right Now: Stocks opening higher on Wall Street

Stocks are opening slightly higher on Wall Street Monday following modest gains in Europe and Asia.

Overnight Japan reported subdued economic growth figures for the second quarter. This week investors will be focused on the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve’s latest meeting and earnings from retailers.

Energy companies led the gainers. The Dow Jones industrial average is up 68 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 18,644. The Standard & Poor’s 500 is up 6 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 2,191. The Nasdaq composite is up 19 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 5,253

Oil rose 61 cents to $45.10 a barrel in New York. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 1.54 per cent.
