TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (12,466.12 up 4.87 points):

Westaim Corp. (TSX:WED). Insurance. Up half a cent, or 20 per cent, at three cents on 5,743,900 shares. The financial sector was up 0.65 per cent at 184.72 points.

Celtic Exploration Ltd. (TSX:CLT). Oil and gas. Down two cents, or 0.08 per cent, at $26.27 on 4,672,425 shares. The oil and gas explorer’s stock dipped a day after receiving a friendly takeover offer from Canadian affiliates of U.S. energy giant Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:XOM), pegged at $3.1 billion.

Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Oil and gas. Up 86 cents, or 3.78 per cent, at $23.64 on 4,566,594 shares. The energy sector gained 0.51 per cent to 267.85 points.

Air Canada (TSX:AC.B). Airline. Up 10 cents, or 6.58 per cent, at $1.62 on 4,321,765 shares. The national carrier announced it is boosting capacity on regional routes across Western Canada this fall and winter to meet demand. It will also introduce new Bombardier Q-400 Next Gen aircraft next year.

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation equipment. Up a penny, or 0.26 per cent, at $3.80 on 4,030,236 shares. The industrial sector advanced 01.5 per cent to 116.68 points.

Lundin Mining Corp. (TSX:LUN). Miner. Up four cents, or 0.74 per cent, at $5.42 on 3,789,424 shares. The metals and mining sector led the advancers, up 0.73 per cent to 947.87 points.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,312.34 up 8.34 points):

ArPetrol Ltd. (TSXV:RPT). Oil and gas explorer. Unchanged at 1.5 cents on 9,516,885 shares.

Pinecrest Energy Inc. (TSXV:PRY). Oil and gas explorer. Up 12 cents, or 7.41 per cent, at $1.74 on 5,906,589 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

BCE Inc. (TSX:BCE). Communications and media. Up 15 cents, or 0.34 per cent, at $43.63 on 833,046 shares. The federal broadcast regulator turned down BCE’s $3.4-billion takeover of Astral Media, one of the biggest takeover ever submitted to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.

Rocky Mountain Dealerships Inc. (TSX:RME). Construction equipment. Unchanged at 3.5 cents on 1,244,000 shares. The Calgary-based company reached a deal to buy Case IH locations in Grimshaw and Falher, Alta. for an undisclosed sum. Houlder Automotive Ltd., which owns the two dealerships, had about $20 million of revenue last year from assets included in the agreement.

Sun Life Financial Inc. (TSX:SLF). Insurer. Up 60 cents, or 2.48 per cent, at $24.77 on 1,626,150 shares. Britain’s financial regulator has fined a subsidiary of the insurer 600,000 pounds for what it called “failings” in the governance of its with-profits business. The Financial Services Authority ruling says the design and operation of the company’s governance arrangements were unclear and inadequate.
