TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:
Toronto Stock Exchange (12,230.59 down 130.61 points):
Bombardier (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation equipment. Down 16 cents, or 4.43 per cent, at $3.45 on 14,029,116 shares. The train and plane maker pushed back the first flight of its new CSeries aircraft by six months and announced that 1,200 railway employees will be cut across its global network next year. Also, the Montreal-based company posted profits of US$212 million, up 10 per cent from a year-earlier while revenue slightly dipped to $4.3 billion from $4.6 billion.
Manulife Financial Corp. (TSX:MFC). Insurer. Down 52 cents, or 4.15 per cent, at $12 on 4,769,523 shares. The financials subgroup fell 1.17 per cent to 181.59 points.
Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TSX:PWT). Oil and gas. Down 54 cents, or 4.83 per cent, at $10.65 on 3,794,148 shares. The Calgary-based company’s stock continued to slide for a second day in a row after announcing Tuesday four of its vice-presidents have stepped down.
Uranium One. (TSX:UUU). Miner. Up five cents, or 2.56 per cent, at $2 on 3,527,442 shares. The uranium miner’s stock lifted for the first time this month. Earlier in the week, Uranium One posted a $61.6-million loss in the third-quarter, due to a $79.1 million writedown related to its South Zarechnoye uranium deposit.
Whitecap Resources Inc. (TSX:WCP). Oil and gas. Up 12 cents, or 1.45 per cent, at $8.41 on 3,326,192 shares. The Calgary-based company announced Tuesday that it booked third-quarter profits of $10.7 million or eight cents per share, up from $10.1 million or 14 cents per share it earned in the same 2011 period. Petroleum and natural gas sales more than doubled to $85.3 million from $38.5 million.
Baja Mining Corp. (TSX:BAJ). Miner. Up a penny, or eight per cent, at 13.5 cents on 3,290,110 shares. The Vancouver-based company said the lenders to its Boleo project in Mexico agreed to two further extensions to the standstill agreement until Nov. 20.
TSX Venture Exchange (1,290.71 down 12.43 points):
Zodiac Exploration Inc. (TSXV:ZEX). Oil explorer. Unchanged at 9.5 cents on 5,898,000 shares.
Border Petroleum Corp. (TSXV:BOR). Oil and gas explorer. Down a penny, or eight per cent, at 11.5 cents on 4,036,750 shares.

Agrium Inc. (TSX:AGU). Fertilizer. Down $11.37, or 10.69 per cent, at $95.03 on 1,987,670 shares. Third-quarter profits were cut more than half to US$129 million from $293 million last year while sales revenue was down six per cent. Agrium Inc. has been fending off New York-based activist investor Jana Partners.
Rona Inc. (TSX:RON). Retailer. Down 33 cents, or 3.25 per cent, at $9.82 on 245,167 shares. The home improvement retailer saw its net profit fall to $5.1 million in the third quarter due to a drop in sales, more competition and several non-recurring costs. In the same period last year, it earned $47.8 million while consolidated revenues were fairly steady at $1.34 billion.
WestJet (TSX:WJA). Airline. Up 11 cents, or 0.61 per cent, at $18.07 on 661,746 shares. Third-quarter profits soared almost 80 per cent as the Calgary-based airline got a lift from revenues that totalled $866.5 million, up from year-ago $755.3 million.
