TORONTO – Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:
Toronto Stock Exchange (12,744.11 down 134.47 points):
TORC Oil and Gas Ltd. (TSX:TOG). Oil and gas. Up five cents, or 2.59 per cent, at $1.98 on 28.45 million shares. The Calgary-based energy company closed higher a day after announcing a big jump in reserves and production due to its acquisition of Vero Energy Inc. last year.
BlackBerry (TSX:BB). Wireless technology. Up $1.21, or 8.16 per cent, at $16.04 on 10.23 million shares. The former company known as Research In Motion announced it sold 1 million of its new smartphones to an “established partner.” The shipments will start immediately.
Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation equipment. Up six cents, or 1.44 per cent, at $4.24 on 6.93 million shares.
B2Gold Corp. (TSX:BTO). Miner. Down eight cents, or 0.08 per cent, at $3.06 on 5.6 million shares. Gold led the decliners on the main index, sliding 2.43 per cent to 250.22 points, as the price of the bullion fell US$3.30 to $1,588.40 per ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TSX:FM). Miner. Up 47 cents, or 2.27 per cent, at $21.16 on 4.45 million shares. The Vancouver-based company announced Tuesday it extended its $5.1-billion hostile takeover bid for Inmet Mining Corp. (TSX:IMN) to March 21, from the previous deadline of Monday night at midnight. Inmet’s stock was up 81 cents, or 1.16 per cent, at $70.79 on 1.54 million shares.
Royal Bank of Canada (TSX:RY). Bank. Down $1.05, or 1.68 per cent, at $61.45 on 4.2 million shares. The financials sector was off 0.94 per cent to 199.04 points.
TSX Venture Exchange (1,115.36 down 3.79 points):
EastCoal Inc. (TSXV:ECX). Miner. Up 1.5 cents, or 27.27 per cent, at seven cents on 16.35 million shares. The Vancouver-based company’s stock is back in the black after dropping 21.43 per cent Tuesday when it announced it will shed about 400 jobs at its two mines in Ukraine, about a third of the people it employs in the country. EastCoal also said it restarted its wash plant at Menzhinsky mine at the end of February.
Galway Metals Inc. (TSX:GWM). Mine explorer. Unchanged at three cents, on 5.12 million shares.

Air Canada (TSX:AC.B). Airline. Up eight cents, or 3.11 per cent, at $2.65 on 1.71 million shares. The federal government said Tuesday that it would give Canada’s largest airline more time to eliminate the $4.2-billion deficit in its pension plan. But it imposed strict rules on the airline that limit executive pay and prevent it from paying dividends.
Power Financial Corp. (TSX:PWF). Insurance and wealth manager. Down 77 cents, or 2.61 per cent, at $28.75 on 1.89 million shares. The parent of Great-West Lifeco (TSX:GWO) and IGM Financial (TSX:IGM) fourth-quarter profit dropped substantially to $278 million or 39 cents per share from $533 million or 75 cents per share. The stock of Great-West fell 11 cents, or 0.41 per cent to $26.97 on 1.22 million shares. IGM’s stock also dropped 14 cents, or 0.31 per cent, at $45.58 on 430,633 shares.
