Newfoundland chicken plant shuts down production after licence suspended

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – A chicken plant in Newfoundland has had its operating licence suspended and stopped production.

St. John’s-based Country Ribbon says no products have been recalled, but the suspension affects its ability to operate as a federally inspected plant.

Chief executive Ian Pittman says the suspension was implemented because the company did not meet a deadline set by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for documenting food safety improvements at the plant.

Pittman says the company is working with the agency to improve the monitoring of its food safety, its analysis of potential problems and its record-keeping.

He says a consultant will assist the firm to comply with the agency’s requests, and hopes to resume operations within a few days.

The company employs about 325 people.
