SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Puerto Rico is preparing to welcome regular, direct flights to Mexico for the first time in 15 years.
The executive director of the island’s Tourism Company says Mexican airline Volaris will travel between San Juan and Cancun every Thursday and Friday starting July 2.
Ingrid Rivera said Tuesday that the flights are expected to generate some $10 million a year for the U.S. territory.
The announcement comes after Mexicana cancelled its Mexico-Puerto Rico route in 2000. Mexican airline Interjet offered short-lived promotional flights in 2013.
