Striking Pennsylvania teachers performing community service

HERNDON, Pa. – Striking teachers in one central Pennsylvania school district have decided to perform community service instead of picketing.

The (Sunbury) Daily Item ( ) reports the Line Mountain School District teachers picked up litter along a creek and cleaned up a ballfield on Monday. On Tuesday, the teachers planned to cook dinner at the Ronald McDonald House in Danville. The house provides shelter for the families of ill children who must travel to receive hospital treatment.

The teachers planned to provide bagged lunches to students on Wednesday.

The strike began Thursday in the district about 35 miles north of Harrisburg. The teachers struck after the school board voted Wednesday night to reject an arbitrator’s report.

The strike must end Friday under a law requiring a minimum number of classroom days for students.
