Underground rock burst closes part of Quebec gold mine; no injuries

TORONTO – Iamgold Corp. (TSX:IMG) has shut down a section of its Westwood mine east of Rouyn-Noranda, Que., following an underground rock burst on Thursday.

The company says no employees were injured and everyone in the mine was safely evacuated.

However, access to four people was initially blocked, but they were able to leave the mine safely and were not injured.

The company says gold production in the mill was not interrupted because it has sufficient stockpiles from which to work.

However, mining in the area affected by the rock burst has been suspended until an analysis is completed.

Iamgold has four gold mines, including joint ventures, in Quebec, South America and Africa.
