After an early stumble, US stock indexes manage to post moderate gains; Oil price slides

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Stocks are ending moderately higher after overcoming a few early stumbles.

Energy stocks didn’t join the advance and fell along with the price of oil.

U.S. crude sank 3 per cent Friday after Goldman Sachs said a global glut of oil could push prices as low as $20 a barrel.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 102 points, or 0.6 per cent, to close at 16,433.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index increased eight points, or 0.5 per cent, to 1,961.

The Nasdaq composite climbed 26 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 4,822.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.19 per cent.
