US stocks move slightly higher in early trading; Energy stocks are among the early gainers

NEW YORK, N.Y. – U.S. stocks are rising in early trading, led by energy companies as the price of oil turns higher.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 28 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 16,401 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time Tuesday.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index climbed three points, or 0.2 per cent, to 1,956. The Nasdaq composite rose five points, or 0.1 per cent, to 4,812.

Energy and telecommunications stocks rose more than the rest of the market. NRG Energy rose 3 per cent, one of the biggest gains in the S&P 500.

The price of U.S. crude oil was up 1 per cent to $44.43 a barrel in New York.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.21 per cent.
