The feud: Pharrell Williams vs will.i.am

Funky battle

The conflict: The two similarly named singers are locked in funky battle over who has the right to use the nonsensical trademark “I am.” Williams uses the phrase in the name of his web production company, I am OTHER, while Mr. i.am includes the three letters in a number of businesses, including the charity i.am.angel.

The outcome: Williams filed suit on July 1, requesting a ruling of non-infringement on will.i.am’s trademarks. Though a lawyer for will.i.am has sent cease-and-desist letters to Williams, he denies his client has filed his own lawsuit, insisting the Black Eyed Pea hopes to settle acrimoniously. Meanwhile, the judge stuck with the case likely sits sighing loudly, shaking his head.
