‘Gangnam Style’ socio-economics

 

 

“Gangnam Style” is about more than prancing to a sweet bass line. It’s also subtle social commentary on Gangnam, Seoul’s most coveted neighbourhood. In the past 40 years, the area has gone from farmland to housing the country’s 1%. Primarily made up of the nouveau riche, Gangnam residents are known for ostentatiously flashing their wealth. Psy’s fancy clothes and ridiculous dancing has been called a satirical take on the rampant materialism Gangnam represents, and those who aspire to its lifestyle. Regardless of its meaning, there’s no denying Gangnam took this year in style. Herewith, some of the highlights.
