We believe in being contrarians. As Warren Buffett once said, you should be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful. When the Internet bubble burst in 2000-2001 and everybody said, “There’s not going to be any more advertising,” I said, “This is our chance to be ambitious.”
We began investing in partnerships with agencies such as Crispin Porter + Bogusky. We invested in entrepreneurs who would change the face of marketing, who understood what would influence consumers in a digital economy. We invested in media planning when nobody else was. We invested in digital way before everyone else. Then, as soon as everybody else became ambitious, we focused on organic growth—and we’re now the world’s seventh-biggest marketing agency network.
