Twitter Canada’s new boss on the evolution of social media

Rory Capern has just been made managing director of Twitter Canada at a time of upheaval for the company and its users

On January 22, Twitter named Rory Capern as the new managing director of its Canadian operation. The former head of partnerships at Google Canada, he joins the social media platform at a tumultuous time. Twitter is currently wrestling with a stagnant user base, a falling stock price, a series of high-profile resignations by executives and complaints the company hasn’t done enough to curb abuse on its platform.

Meanwhile, Capern steps into a job that has been vacant since September 2014, when Kirstine Stewart became Twitter’s vice president of North American media. Capern officially assumed his role on February 16 (although he was in the office when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited a couple of days earlier). On his second official day, I spoke with him about why he wanted the job, addressing the abuse problem and making sure that “Twitter stays Twitter-y.” Here’s our conversation—as a series of Tweets.
