Joe Gati Sr., 75, has participated in the Ironman Triathlon every year since 1984. Here, Gati explains how he keeps going when he hits a mental wall.

It’s all about mental attitude and positive thinking. When I hit a wall during a race, I slow down, I walk, I crawl—but I have to finish the race. Failure is out of the question.

“That mental attitude is key, because you made an effort to get your body ready, all your muscles are working; [the wall is] just one of those things that happens.

“You can’t give in to it.”
