Originally, and somewhat unimaginatively, dubbed “American Hill” because of the large numbers of Americans who had settled there, this neighbourhood got an assist in establishing its affluent bona fides from the Canadian Pacific Railway. The CPR promoted the area as an exclusive enclave, and renamed it after the posh Montreal neighbourhood where the railway's president lived. Today Mount Royal retains its prosperous character, but of the Alberta neighbourhoods on this list, the residents here are least likely to take part in cultural pasttimes such as gallery-hopping or the symphony. They're also less adventurous when it comes to vacationing: they're the least likely of their Calgary peers to go to Asia, Europe or the Caribbean, and they don't ski nearly as much, either.
