The Feud: Amazon vs. Indigo

Indigo is boycotting any books released from Amazon's new publishing arm. Here's why.

The conflict: Last Christmas, Amazon launched a promotion encouraging consumers to use its Price Check app to scan book bar codes in bricks-and-mortar stores in return for a discount on that same book if they ordered it from Amazon. Along with the obvious sales benefit, Amazon’s app is also used to collect intelligence on competitor’s prices.

The outcome: In retaliation, this month Indigo Books & Music announced it would join U.S. chains Barnes & Noble and Books-a-Million in boycotting any books released from Amazon’s new publishing arm, launched last year. The same week the trio announced its boycott, news leaked that Amazon is planning to open its first-ever boutique retail outlet in its home city of Seattle in the next few months.
